Calcining involves heating to 1000°C. Calcining removes organics, increases filtration rate (i.e., surface area is reduced by fusing more delicate structures of particles and sintering them into small clusters, resulting in larger particle size and increased pore size), oxidizes iron to a less reactive form (which changes the buff-to-grey colors common in crude ore feed to pink or white), increases specific gravity, and increases particle hardness.
